easures can be taken to help prevent some sleep disorders sleep disorders. Some 'common-sense' methods include:

  • establishing a regular bedtime and waking time
  • avoiding taking naps
  • exercising frequently
  • using the bed only for sleep and sex
  • avoiding stimulants such as caffeine
  • practising relaxation exercises.

For people with hypersomnia, the main preventative method is to change sleeping patterns, for example people with narcolepsy can schedule regular naps to help overcome their daytime sleepiness.

The incidence of circadian rhythm circadian rhythm sleep disorders and parasomnias can be reduced by identifying the contributing factors and trying to minimise them.
