Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

Course

Recent work also emphasises the substantial morbidity associated with PTSD. Not only do PTSD symptoms themselves interfere markedly with social and occupational function, but comorbid mood and substance use disorders contribute to the negative impact of PTSD. Furthermore, for many people with PTSD, this is a chronic condition, lasting many years. In their review of this literature, Solomon and Davidson (1997) emphasised that trauma victims are not only disproportionate users of the health care system, but they are also reluctant to seek mental health treatment. They conclude that the costs of exposure to trauma are enormously high, not only to the victims, but also to health care systems and society as a whole.
