Comorbidity with Depression

OCD and depression seem to have a significant overlap with many patients suffering from OCD eventually developing depression (den Boer, 1997). This overlap has the effect that patients with the co-morbid condition have a slower and less pronounced recovery from their diagnoses (Fawcett, 1997; Coryell et al., 1992) and these patients have an increased suicide risk (Hollander et al., 1996a).

In an article describing the emergence of manic and hypomanic episodes in patients being treated for OCD and other anxiety disorders Berk et al. (1996) suggest a possible overlap between OCD and mania. This statement needs to be confirmed with further studies.
