Multiple sclerosis
Epidemiology
There are thought to be approximately 1.1 million people with multiple sclerosis (MS) worldwide. About two-thirds of these people experience their first symptoms between the age of 20 and 40. Of the remainder, most cases have their onset before 20 years of age, but in a smaller number the disease appears to develop in late adult life. Compared with men, women are more likely to develop this disorder and it is about five times more common in temperate zones than in the tropics. There is a family tendency towards multiple sclerosis and it is likely that both genetic and environmental factors play a role. The damage seems to be a result of the immune system attacking the myelin . However, the exact cause of MS has not yet been established.
