stroke

back

A condition resulting from a lack of oxygen to the brain, caused by a block in blood flow or a haemorrhage into the brain tissue which leads to damaged brain tissue. Reversible or irreversible paralysis may occur as a result of the brain damage. If the stroke is to the right hemisphere of the cerebrum then paralysis will occur on the left side of the body. If it is to the left hemisphere of the cerebrum paralysis will occur on the right side of the body. Strokes affecting the brainstem may cause complex symptoms such as paralysis, difficulties in swallowing, eye paralysis and respiratory problems.
