spinal cord
The part of the central nervous system that extends from the brainstem to the cauda equina (the collection of spinal nerves that descend from the lower part of the spinal cord; the appearance of which resembles a horse's tail). It functions as a sensory and motor conduit between the body and the brain, and is protected by the vertebrae.
