neurofibrillary tangles
An abnormality of the cytoplasm of certain neurons in the cerebral cortex and hippocampus. During postmortem examination, the presence of neurofibrillary tangles, along with neuritic plaques, is used to diagnose Alzheimer's disease. The density of neurofibrillary tangles in the brain correlates with the degree of cognitive impairment.
