neuritic plaques
An abnormal cluster of dead and dying nerve cells, other brain cells and the protein beta amyloid found throughout the hippocampus and cerebral cortex. During a postmortem examination the presence of neuritic plaques, along with neurofibrillary tangles, is used to diagnose Alzheimer's disease.
