myelin
The soft, white, partially fatty material which makes up the sheath surrounding a nerve axon. It insulates the axons and enables signals to be conducted along them at a faster rate. In people with multiple sclerosis, the myelin becomes damaged or destroyed, and the impulse transmission is impaired.
