hormones

back

A naturally occurring chemical substance, produced by specialised cells in the body that has a regulatory effect on other cells or organs in the body. A hormone may affect the metabolism or behaviour of other cells. Unlike Neurotransmitters, hormones usually act at a distance from the point of their release, eg ACTH is released from the anterior pituitary gland and activates the adrenal cortex to produce glucocorticoid hormones such as cortisol.
