A gene is a specific segment of DNA on a chromosome. Each human is estimated to have 100 000 genes and each gene is responsible for one inherited characteristic. Genes are passed from parent to child and they determine who we are, distinguishing one individual from another. Some diseases are hereditary, for example familial Alzheimer's disease and Huntington's disease, and many other illnesses may have a genetic component to their aetiology. |
