dorsal

back

An anatomical term used to refer to the back or the upper side. If an object is dorsal to another object in the body, it has a position toward the back of the object of reference. When describing the position of a structure in the central nervous system, the term dorsal indicates a different direction for the brain and the spinal cord. The dorsal direction is towards the back for the brainstem and spinal cord, but towards the top of the head for the forebrain. It is the opposite of ventral.
