A large peptide neurotransmitter (also known as corticotropin-releasing factor). It stimulates the release of adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) from the anterior pituitary gland. ACTH stimulates the adrenal cortex to synthesise glucocorticoids, eg. cortisol which causes several changes in intermediary metabolism, eg synthesis of glucose, catabolism of proteins and mobilisation of free fatty acids, and also regulates the immune system. |
