cognitive behavioural therapy

back

A modified form of behavioural therapy, as thinking is viewed as a form of behaviour. CBT is a direct form of psychotherapy that teaches people to understand how their thinking patterns contribute to their symptoms and how to change their thoughts and behaviour so that symptoms are less likely to occur. For instance, the sufferer will learn to expose themselves to whatever situation commonly triggers feelings of anxiety and then attempt to prevent themselves from reacting in the way that their illness would normally encourage them to do. This is also known as exposure and response-prevention therapy.
