Classification systems have been devised to help standardise the diagnosis of mental illness throughout the world. The two most frequently used classification systems for diagnosing mental illnesses are the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition (DSM-IV), developed by the American Psychiatric Association, and the International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision (ICD-10), developed by the World Health Organisation. In an attempt to further standardise the diagnosis of mental illnesses, with each revision and edition, these classification systems are becoming increasingly similar. |
