A class of drugs with a wide range of effects. Often used to treat certain anxiety, they have a hypnotic effect and an anticonvulsive effect and may be used to treat epileptic seizures. In addition they have a muscle relaxing effect. Benzodiazepines work to enhance the inhibitory action of the neurotransmitter gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA), by modulating the activity of GABAA receptors. Some people become addicted to benzodiazepines and because of this, this class of drugs should not be prescribed for long-term use. |
