A chemical found in neurons which acts as a neurotransmitter. Acetylcholine is linked with learning and memory formation and a lack of acetylcholine in the brain is thought to be partly responsible for the symptoms of Alzheimer's disease. This neurotransmitter has also been implicated in the altered mood states found in mania and depression. An imbalance between dopamine and acetylcholine results in some symptoms of Parkinson's disease. |
