gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA)

back

A low molecular weight, amino acidneurotransmitter, widely distributed in the neurotransmitter and acts to stop the transmission of electrical signals across the synapse. By controlling the transmission of signals, GABA helps to decrease the symptoms of some brain disorders, such as epileptic seizures and muscle spasms. GABA deficiency has also been implicated in anxiety disordersHuntington's disease and possibly Parkinson's disease. Some treatments act on GABA receptors, such as benzodiazepines which are used to treat anxiety disorders.
