Dementia

Prevention

Dementia cannot be prevented, but the course of the disorder can be influenced by life style changes and some medications.

However, as people age, it may be beneficial to regularly exercise the brain and body in an attempt to protect the brain from premature failure. There is no guaranteed way of protecting the brain from the wear and tear of ageing, but maintaining a mentally, physically and socially active lifestyle may help to reduce the effects of neurodegeneration.

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, such as aspirin, ibuprofen and estrogens may have protective effects against the neurodegenerative changes seen in Alzheimer's disease and their therapeutic benefit in disease prevention is currently under study. However, some of these drugs have serious side effects and should only be used regularly when prescribed by a physician.
